Downloads
2012 Code as JSON
code.json.zip (26.4 MB)
This is the basic data about every law, one JSON file per law. Fields include section, catch line,
text, history, and structural ancestry (i.e., title number/name and chapter number/name). Note that
any sections that contain colons (e.g., § 8.01-581.12:2) have an underscore in place of the
colon in the filename, because neither Windows nor Mac OS support colons in filenames.
2012 Code as XML
code.xml.zip (28.6 MB)
This is the basic data about every law, one XML file per law, in The State Decoded’s native
XML format. Note that any sections that contain colons (e.g., § 8.01-581.12:2) have an
underscore in place of the colon in the filename (e.g., 8.01-581.12_2.xml), because
neither Windows nor Mac OS support colons in filenames.
2012 Code as SGML
code.sgml.zip (13.4 MB)
This is the SGML file provided by the Code Commission of Virginia. There is no DTD, the Titles
aren’t listed, some parts of the Code are missing, and there’s no documentation.
Title and Chapter Structures as CSV
structure.zip (24 KB)
Every chapter of the Code, in order, with its container title name and number, and the chapter’s
name and number.
Title, Chapter, and Section Structures as CSV
structure-sections.zip (604 KB)
Every section of the Code, in order, with its container chapter name and number and that chapter’s
containing title’s name and number.
Dictionary as JSON
dictionary.json.zip (1 MB)
All terms defined in the Code, with each term’s definition, the section in which it is defined,
and the scope (section, chapter, title, universal) of that definition. Note that some terms are not
yet detected by the scraper, so this is not an exhaustive list of terms.
